Physical and health education in the Primary Years Programme is crucial for a child's overall development and well-being. It empowers students and encourages them to engage in regular physical activity through sports and develops the motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices. A Taekwondo Belt promotion test was organized for the PYP students at LAI. It was supervised by the official members of the Pakistan Taekwondo Federation. Taekwondo is a rigorous martial art that improves health, strength, flexibility, and endurance. It teaches practical self-defense techniques that can be useful in real-life situations. The belt promotion test assessed students’ physical fitness, execution of patterns that combine various techniques in specific sequences and the breaking of tiles and wooden planks to demonstrate these techniques using power and control. It was indeed heartening to witness the sophistication and ease with which the students conducted themselves through these highly challenging sequences. LAI is proud to announce the star of the competition, Yahya Osama of PYP V, who is the first ever student of LAI to secure the prestigious Black Belt at such a young age. We applaud his exceptional skill set and performance.

A Homage to Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal

“It is the nature of the self to manifest itself. In every atom slumbers the might of the self.” – Allama Iqbal

On 9th November, PYP celebrated Iqbal Day with utmost zeal and gusto to commemorate the life and vision of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the ‘Poet of the East’. Iqbal’s philosophy and vision had been discussed in class in the weeks preceding the performance, and teachers as well as students were thoroughly involved in the process. Iqbal’s writings, especially with reference to his poems with a message for children, were a favourite topic in class discussions. PYP I & II had a short assembly where they spoke about the vision and philosophy of Iqbal in the form of an interesting presentation. Students performed a role play on Iqbal’s famous poems, ‘Humdardi’ and ‘Makra aur Makhi’. Their short skits were well prepared and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The highlight of the event was when our students spoke about the poet with reference to IB learner profile attributes like ‘principled’, ‘knowledgeable’ and ‘thinker’. Discussing these attributes gave them a real-life context of philosophy and ideology present in the poems of Allama Iqbal. The assembly ended with the poems of Iqbal sung by our students with zeal and fervor amid loud applause. The recitals and performances gave an opportunity to the students of PYP to gather on a platform and reflect upon the great influence of Dr. Allama Iqbal on the spiritual and political awakening of the Muslims of the Subcontinent, paving the way for the birth of Pakistan.

Celebrating the Incredible Constant - Pi !!!
Celebrating the Incredible Constant - Pi

Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14th (3/14), in honor of the mathematical constant pi, which is approximately equal to 3.14159. On this day, students at LAI MYP engaged in various activities related to pi, including group presentations on the discovery and history of pi. Students worked together to research and present on the contributions of mathematicians like Archimedes and Isaac Newton, who made significant discoveries about pi throughout history. Additionally, students participated in fun and engaging activities, like pi memorization challenge, where they tried to calculate the maximum number of decimals of pi in 5 minutes.

A number of activities were conducted in PYP also during different lessons and the outcome manifested students' interest in learning about the real life application of the incredible constant- pi! They were delighted to understand the stability and infiniteness of this constant as they linked it up with circles. Some students also baked pies at home to celebrate the day.

These activities helped the IB learners to better understand the importance of pi and its applications in mathematics and beyond, as well as its historical and cultural significance.

INSET: Making INQUIRY visible in IB
INSET Making Inquiry Visible

Excellence is an outcome of consistent habits, conscious choices and repetitive attempts at pursuing it. In order to equip our teaching team with novel pedagogical strategies aligned with both the requisites of 21st Century classrooms and the rigors of International Baccalaureate frameworks, an intensive INSET (In School Educational Training) was conducted at the start of Term II. The INSET titled Making INQUIRY Visible was designed for IB teachers across the Continuum (PYP, MYP, DP) and engaged teachers from all subject groups. Over the course of two days, the participants explored different inquiry frameworks starting from the classical inquiry cycle by John Dewey to modern frameworks by Kath Murdoc and multiple strategies of Visible Thinking from Harvard University's Project Zero.

The workshop series, designed and led by Ms. Aruj Khaliq, enabled the participants to embed concrete linkages for making Inquiry Visible through the use of thinking routines. The sessions concluded with all IB teachers collaboratively presenting links with the existing curriculum, validating the effectiveness of the Thinking Routines for designing inquiry. The participants left the workshop venue packed with tools to use in their classrooms and with the aim to build that ecosystem which makes INQUIRY Visible.

It was a valuable learning experience for the learners as they understood that artifacts are precious treasures that help us unravel stories and incidents from the past.

Students are going to further reflect on their learning throughout the theme as they make timelines from important events in the past and emphasize on the significance of artifacts.

Where we are in Place and Time – Tuning in Activity

Tuning Activity

As we stepped into the second theme "Where we are in Place and Time", we aimed at learning about exploration and discovery. In this theme, students have been curious to conduct an inquiry regarding human consequences that lead to exploration. Also, they wanted to find out how the exploration of elements of Earth (land, water, space) has advanced over time.

In order to tune in to the theme, students were briefly made to visit a nearby park. They thought of themselves as explorers and were also able to distinguish between exploration and discovery. This activity further supported their understanding of maps as they drew a map of the park as part of their reflection. This activity was done in pairs as students discussed different perspectives of how they could design a map.

STEM

PYP II students displayed remarkable inventive thinking skills as they engaged in a variety of STEM activities for their theme "How the World Works". They created various models of simple machines using a wide range of recycled materials and further investigated the effect of forces including applied force, friction, gravity and drag on how the machines work. Students digged in deeper to witness and explain Newton's Laws of Motion as they made a popsicle stick catapult representing a lever, a pulley with a wheel and axle, a plastic bag parachute showing friction and drag and a balloon rocket to show opposing forces. Working on Lever, Parachute, Catapult, Pulley and Balloon Rocket Activity, they worked on demonstrating Newton's law of Action and Reaction , Force as well as Gravity. As a final step, students came up with consequential ideas about how these simple machines could be used to serve a purpose in the real life context.

Celebrating the 23rd of March, Pakistan Day
Pakistan Day

online learning about how the Pakistan Day Resolution demanded a separate state for South Asian Muslims – a state where Muslims can live in a majority, observe their cultural and religious festivities, and freely engage in Islamic religious worships without having any feeling of obstruction by the Hindus who were in majority at that time in undivided Sub Continent. The students of PYP V did multiple activities including one in numeracy with the Pakistan Flag. The students learned about reflective symmetry of the flag of Pakistan in all the 4 quadrants. The MYP Visual Art class incorporated the study of optical illusions in a modern day designed fantasy flag of Pakistan. Other than commemorating the 23rd March Pakistan Resolution, MYP Individuals & Societies class discussed how this day also honors the adoption of Pakistan’s First Constitution on 23 March 1956 that marked the successful transition – from the Dominion of Pakistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, making Pakistan the world’s first Islamic Republic.

They wrote speeches and shared their thoughts about the initiatives being currently taken in Pakistan for women. MYP II made a compilation of vdos to express what they feel about IWD. The younger students of PYP wrote small notes about their role models and some drew significant maternal figures in their lives.

The First Day Back at School
First Day Back

“I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” - Thomas Jefferson

One of the many things that 2020 taught us is resilience in the face of unexpected circumstances. It is only through adapting to the new normal that we have been able to pull through - a testament to that is the fabulous Distance Learning Platform & Hybrid Learning Programme conceived and regulated here at Learning Alliance International. With the 2021 setting in, our students, who were on DLP, once again transitioned into Hybrid Learning Programme and attended the first day on campus with infectious enthusiasm. The absolute joy of setting foot in the familiar environment of the school after a long time was visible on the tiny masked faces. The lessons continued in the colourful classrooms arranged to provide an optimum learning experience in a socially distanced manner. Sounds of music and laughter echoed in the corridors and there were monitored PSPE lessons held outdoors. The first day back at school witnessed various activities in a fun-filled environment, allowing students of PYP I - V to socialize with safe distancing and foster healthy collaboration with each other.

HOW THE WORLD WORKS

PYP IV is learning about the Natural Resources of the World and their growing demand in this term's Transdisciplinary Theme that is 'HOW THE WORLD WORKS'. Through their online class discussions involving various learning tools, students inquired about the importance of water, its usage and conservation in our daily lives. The students learnt how we only have 4% of clean water available on Earth and explored about ways in which we can sustain what is left of it. The PYP Students also made posters to create awareness about the importance of using water carefully without wasting it.

NEW YEAR - NEW RESOLUTIONS

Beginning 2021 with the Distance Learning Programme

PYP V students worked on Padlet to reflect on the past year and think about the coming year. The students will be reading their responses during morning circles this week, adding more thoughts and setting goals for the new year. In later weeks, they will check back to see if they have come closer to achieving their goals. In the Numeracy lesson, they started the year by discussing IB attitudes for this month i.e. Tolerance and Empathy. The students did an activity based on gratitude. They answered various questions and concluded the session by writing Thank you notes to their friends.

World Children’s Day

“Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” - John F Kennedy World Children’s Day is celebrated on the 20th of November every year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children about their rights and improving their welfare. At LAI the day was stretched into a weeklong celebration (on campus as well as on DLP), where the concept of Identity and the rights of the children were discussed with the PYP students. An Art Competition was held to bring out the creativity and artistic talents among young artists, encouraging them to research, think and express themselves using the art medium of their choice. The fantastic displays of colour and unique insights into the minds of our young learners were a treat to witness, bringing forward the issues faced by children everywhere in the world.

WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT

World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated on the 10 November every year. The objective of this day is to highlight the significant role science plays in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues and technology.

What is the purpose of all these planets if we are not using them? This was the governing thought behind this year's World Science Day exhibit in PYP.

Continuing their UOI concepts from the second theme "Where we are in place and time", PYP V created futuristic inventions that could one day help mankind live in a different habitable zone. They also explored the possibility of extraterrestrial life visiting Earth. The projects of PYP students were based on the assumption that humans have succeeded in populating Mars, and now are on a quest to discover other habitable zones in our Milky Way. Based on this, they created inventions that would one day make life possible on Venus, Europa, Titan and Proxima Centauri B.

PYP IV explored the topic of Electricity and Magnetism. With the objective of strengthening their theoretical knowledge, the students of PYP IV designed parallel and series circuits using recycled materials. Constructing 3D models of a microscope, telescope and an astrolabe, the students of PYP II and PYP III acted like junior scientists and performed various experiments. Where PYP II learned the concept of reflection and refraction, PYP III used milk, an everyday product, and turned it into Marbled Paper.

PYP I talked about the importance of science and watched videos on various scientific inventions. They then illustrated and spoke about an invention of their own choice.

The MYP students discussed the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives and the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

The week-long activity, therefore, was an interesting and thought-provoking experience to broaden our horizons, think imaginatively and look beyond the stars.

RAMZAN KAREEM - MONTH OF MERCY AND BLESSINGS
Ramzan

Ramzan as a month of intense prayer and dawn-to-dusk fasting aims to bring us closer to God. However, more importantly the message of Ramzan is the spirit of charity and brotherhood. This is precisely what was witnessed during the online lessons of our IB PYP where students spoke about how it teaches us to be balanced, caring, principled, open minded and reflective. The conversation starters about the teachings of Ramzan had our young learners think and express themselves about what does it really mean to be a good Muslim especially during this holy month. Children spoke about helping the poor and needy and most importantly to practise patience - a virtue that is desperately desired during the current scenario. Students also discussed what fasting means to them and vowed to let this special month be marked with the essence of generosity to bring the people closer spiritually in these times of isolation.

INVESTIGATIONS AND REFLECTIONS: PYP II'S LEARNING JOURNEY ON 'MATTER'
PYP II Matter

Investigation and Reflection go hand in hand during the Unit of Inquiry lessons in Primary Years Programme. The Google Meet sessions during the DLP were no different as PYP II students effectively demonstrated their understanding of ‘Matter’ through action-based learning. Students investigated about matter and its properties, states of matter and changes in matter during their Google Meet sessions leading to activities that exhibited learning in real-life context. Posters were made to illustrate arrangement of particles in different states of matter: solid, liquid and gas and students used different types of materials to show how particles are spread out. The outcome was a splendid inquiry thoroughly enjoyed by our little learners.

FRACTIONS HAVE NEVER BEEN SO MUCH FUN!

The colourful costumes built up a lot of excitement during the morning assembly.

The Phantom Tollbooth
The Phantom Tollbooth

The Phantom Tollbooth is a fantastical trip into a child's mind, with adventures in the Land of Wisdom where the child is forced to think and learn about many new things. Rooted in scholastically driven characters, it makes for a script that is aptly demonstrative of what inquiry based interdisciplinary learning can look like in IB. The LAI Annual Play of MYP I and PYP V materialised this production of over seventy students including cast, choir and the crew under the patronage of the LAI Performing Arts Department. The inquiry process, learning and the outcome were all put together as an exhibit on the day of the performance. This collaboration between students and their teachers, who all worked tirelessly for the set design, light, sound and costumes, created this magnificent 'imaginarium of learning' at the school amphitheatre that left everyone in the audience spellbound!

Celebrating Allama Mohammad Iqbal, "Hakeem-ul-Ummat"
Celebrating Allama Mohammad Iqbal

“O Fellows, I am here for a few moments, as a gust, like a morning star, I will fade and vanish in a few moments” – Allama Mohammad Iqbal.

Contrary to his own words, Allama Iqbal, our National Poet still resides in our hearts and his poetry is embedded in the very fabric of our culture and the literary asset of this region. Allama Mohammad Iqbal was undoubtedly one of the greatest poets and philosophers of all times. He also took a prominent part in the politics of the sub continent and in the intellectual and cultural reconstruction of the Islamic world and made numerous contributions to the poetry collection in Persian and Urdu Languages. Learning Alliance International paid tribute to the visionary, through a powerful performance story, along with recitation of his famous poems.

PYP I and II paid tribute to the poet by singing a milli naghma, ‘Iqbal Hai, Iqbal Hamara.' PYP III, IV and V had a character parade from the famous poems of Allama Iqbal. Like Aik makra aur makhi ,Pahaar aur gulehri, Chaand aur sitaray, Bang e Darah, Jawab e shikwa, Shaheen, and Qalam.

MYP II & III participated with a lot of zest and zeal to communicate the essence of his works, and brought to lime light his views on the role and place of a Teacher in a student’s life. Allama Iqbal’s ‘Shaheen’ served as a platform to put across some of his most renowned poems. DP I students presented a few more complex works of the poet with great eloquence and urdu delivery. Followed by a performance story, ‘Aik Aarzoo’ that propels one to put aside the capitalist patriarchal system that we live in, and connect with our surroundings and nature. The theme of the performance story was centered upon collectivity and transformation, urging the students to connect with themselves and look beyond. The day was celebrated to inspire the students and kindle a spark for life-long learning.

Marching into Spring

Spring Carnival
“Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party.”
Robin Williams

Spring was warmly welcomed at LAI with great zeal and enthusiasm as everyone celebrated the much awaited occasion of the year — LAI Spring Carnival 2022. It was indeed an evening of jollity that offered a range of happening activities along with a vibrant decor of flowers, balloons, buntings, and butterflies, thus manifesting all the colours of spring.

Our music faculty members and students kept the spirits of the crowd high with upbeat music performances that enchanted the students and parents.

To further keep things exciting, the event also featured a haunted room, dart game, train ride, art and craft stalls, jumping castle, beautifully embellished stalls with accessories and goodies. The sweet smell of fresh popcorn and barbecue hot off the grill filled the air under the spring sky.

In addition to that, our young learners were able to bring out the entrepreneur in them as they put up colourful stalls together with their parents that included baked items, flavoured lemonades, handmade jewellery and stationery, beauty items, accessories, plants, savoury items and much more. This spirit of entrepreneurism did not only help them become responsible with finance and budgeting, but also became a golden opportunity for them to become socially responsible as they wholeheartedly contributed the proceeds as charity to an IB Trust school based in Lahore.

The event marked a huge success for the IB learning community in terms of leisure and entertainment, social obligation, organisation and interactivity.

Young Scientists - Understanding Chemical Reactions

Young Scientists

PYP V students while studying the properties of matter, visited the science lab to further understand the physical and chemical changes that matter goes through. Using the scientific method, they formed a hypothesis about how baking soda would react with vinegar. They then tested their hypothesis by mixing the two, made observations and recorded the data. The young learners were pleasantly surprised when the balloons fitted on their flasks inflated with gas produced due to this chemical reaction.

The experiment helped reinforce what chemical and physical changes are, and the vital role reactants play in forming a byproduct.

PYP III students embarked upon their second theme 'Where we are in place and time' and discussed the importance of preserving artifacts. They were able to come up with the notion that examining artifacts helps us find out about the history of cultures, people and their lifestyles.

As part of the tuning in activity, students made a visit to the Lahore Museum and observed a variety of artifacts in various galleries. They were enthralled to see pots, utensils, ornaments and toys from the Harrappan civilization in the Asian Gallery. Students were also fascinated to look at the costumes of emperors, scriptures of holy books and carvings in the Islamic Gallery.

Moreover, artifacts in the Chinese, Sikh and Buddhist Gallery also captivated the attention of the students. A variety of arms and weapons, coins, postage stamps and pictures of famous personalities from the era of Pakistan's creation also helped students recall the historical events.

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME - JUNE 2020

“When the untapped potential of a student meets the liberating art of a teacher, a miracle unfolds.” – Mary Hatwood Futrell

JUNE DLP DAY 1

The Distance Learning Programme at LAI resumed after a month long Summer Break, as students excitedly returned to their classrooms before transitioning to their next grade levels. The teachers welcomed the students with interesting plans for their Google Meet sessions and the children enthusiastically told stories about their summers - It was interesting to see the varied and colourful interactions between the teachers and students through the use of Jamboards, Padlets, interactive white boards and informative videos. The students enjoyed their Unit of Inquiry lessons focusing on ATL skills and the activities involving Gymnastics, Public Speaking and Visual Arts.

Through the use of a carefully planned and coherent curriculum DLP at Learning Alliance International continues to provide an interactive and effective platform in these unusual times. This structure and planning was visible in all the classrooms today as the teachers and the young learners engaged in an invigorating experience of sharing and learning about the various concepts together.

Fractions Fun

Our IB PYP IV had a delicious and exciting adventure in their online Math lesson as they baked delectable items to understand the concept of 'Fractions'. A baking project was assigned to them so that they can apply their classroom knowledge to the real-life situation and well ... get a tasty treat, too at the end of their efforts! Since, learning in the IB PYP is a holistic transdisciplinary experience that integrates socio-emotional, physical, and cognitive development, therefore, in our PYP classrooms, it takes place in dynamic environments that promote play, discovery and exploration. This was witnessed in this virtual classroom, where Math and Life Skills were integrated to form a wholesome learning experience. Here are some of the highlights of the action-packed baking delights in the form of a Numeracy bulletin on Fractions!!
